Cummings
Valley, Tehachapi
Located approximately 20 minutes from Downtown between
Alpine Forest and Stallion Springs, Cummings Valley
has extremely rich soil and a generous water supply
to make it the perfect location for Ranching and Farming.
There are wide open Ranches and fertile farmland beneath
the rolling hills dotted with ageless Oak trees. It's
the perfect place to stop and visit some of the local
produce stores to purchase a wide variety of the freshest
fruits and vegatable around. You might also want to
visit the popular Indian
Point Ostrich Ranch. Cummings Valley is also home
to the Souza
Family Vineyard. Their excellent wine is sold at
the Applegate Florist shop in Tehachapi, or online.
Cummings Valley has always been a wonderful place
to purchase large parcels of land to build a Home and/or
a Ranch.
Tehachapi Prison
- The State Correctional Facility
Formally known as the Tehachapi California Correctional
Institute, it is the 3rd oldest California State Prison
(opened in 1933), behind #2 Folsom (opened 1880) and
#1 San Quentin (opened 1852.)
When it originally opened in 1933, Tehachapi Prison
housed female inmates. The 1952 Tehachapi earthquake
forced the closure of the Prison and it reopened in
1954 as an all male facility.
The institution covers approximately 1,650 acres and
employs many men and women from Town and nearby areas.
Hollywood knew about Tehachapi State Prison
back in the 1940's when the famous film "The Maltese
Falcon" was made. Directed by John Huston, it starred
Humphrey Bogart as Detective Sam Spade, Peter Lorre
and Mary Astor as the 'evil Dame'. Mary's character
ends up being arrested for murder and Bogey gives her
this classic bit of wisdom:
(Bogey's Character)
"Well, if you get a good break, you'll be out
of Tehachapi in twenty years and you can come back
to me then. I hope they don't hang you, precious,
by that sweet neck. Yes, angel, I'm gonna send you
over. The chances are you'll get off with life.
That means if you're a good girl you'll be out in
twenty years. I'll be waiting for you. If they hang
you, I'll always remember you."
